One of the fundamental rules of Elliott Wave Theory states that within a 5-wave impulsive sequence, Wave 3 cannot be the shortest wave. However, this rule does not imply that Wave 3 must always be the extended wave. While extensions most frequently occur in Wave 3 due to its strong directional momentum, they can also develop in Wave 5 or, less commonly, in Wave 1. Understanding where an extension is forming can help traders better identify the market structure, define potential targets, and improve their trading decisions.

Statistics show that approximately 90% of extensions occur in Wave 3, making it the most commonly extended and typically the strongest wave within an impulsive structure. When Wave 3 extends, it usually reaches at least the 1.618 Fibonacci extension of Wave 1 and can potentially extend toward the 2.618 Fibonacci level or beyond. Extensions in Wave 5 are more common than extensions in Wave 1.

Elliott Wave Extensions: Key Rules to Follow

  • If Wave 5 is extended, Wave 3 must still be longer than Wave 1. Otherwise, the Elliott Wave count is invalid.
  • If Wave 1 is extended, Wave 5 must be shorter than Wave 3. Otherwise, the Elliott Wave count is invalid.
  • For an extended Wave 3, there are two common ways to project the Wave 5 target:
    1. Wave 5 can reach an equality target with Wave 1.
    2. Wave 5 can reach the 0.618 Fibonacci extension of the length from Wave 1 to Wave 3, measured from the end of Wave 4.
  • An impulsive structure with at least one extended wave should contain a minimum of 9 swings. If additional extensions occur within the structure, the number of swings can increase to 13 or even 17.
